Over the past ten years, pink diamonds have increased in value by 300% due to the anticipated closure of the Argyle Diamond Mine in Western Australia by the end of 2020. This impending decrease in supply has skyrocketed the demand of these precious stones for their rarity and beauty.
Pink diamonds caught the world’s eye in 2017 when the CTF Pink Star diamond set the world record for diamond auctions in Hong Kong. The 59.60-carat oval diamond mined by De Beers sold for $71.2 million.
These unprecedented prices will continue to climb as the Argyle Diamond Mine exhausts its limited supply of pink diamonds. Rio Tinto Group, the owner of the mine, will continue supplying pink diamonds through the end of 2020, when the mine will close forever.
According the British new service The Telegraph, pink diamonds are the number one investment opportunity for 2020. Prices have risen steadily in the past 10 years, and will only continue to rise. Since 2014, analysts at The Telegraph have considered Pink Diamonds one of the world’s safest investments.
Meanwhile, Bloomberg reports that pink diamonds are already the rarest diamonds in the world, and the Argyle Mine cannot be replicated. Because of this, many people include pink diamonds in their portfolios for their retirement funds, especially in Australia. While pink diamond prices have steadily risen, they are expected to sharply increase after the closure of the Argyle Diamond Mine.
Pink diamond engagement rings have been a sensation among celebrities since 2002 when Ben Affleck proposed to Jennifer Lopez with a 3 million dollar pink diamond ring. Anna Kournikova joined the elite club of brides-to-be sporting pink diamond rings in 2004 with her engagement to Enrique Iglesias.
Then, in 2016, Nick Cannon made Mariah Carey the woman with the second most expensive engagement ring in history when he proposed with a stunning 17-carat halo ring featuring at 10-carat pink diamond. The most expensive engagement ring in history belonged to Elizabeth Taylor.
