This engagement ring setting from Sylvie pairs a clean 14K white gold band with two natural tapered baguette diamonds, 0.34 carats total weight. The baguettes are set on either side of the center, their width narrowing toward the shank so the eye moves inward and upward.
The mounting is made to receive a pear-shape center stone, which is purchased separately. Until a center is set, the piece reads as an open architectural frame. Once completed, the tapered sides follow the point and shoulders of a pear, lending the design a sense of direction along the finger.
White gold keeps the tone of the setting cool and even, which allows the step-cut facets of the baguettes to show as broad, quiet flashes rather than fine sparkle. Step cuts behave differently from brilliant cuts: fewer facets, longer planes, a more restrained kind of light.
